Trump claims he can end the war in Ukraine, but experts question whether he deserves credit for resolving past conflicts.
Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will most likely visit Russia sometime this year, TASS reports.
Trump indirectly points to himself as a supposed peacemaker and says he aims to resolve the war between Ukraine and Russia.
He believes he has what it takes to end the war. “I’ve settled eight wars. That war is getting closer. Believe it or not, it’s getting closer. And we think we are going to end up getting a settlement between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said.
Conflicts That Lasted Only Days
According to the BBC, however, this is not entirely accurate regarding Trump’s claim that he ended eight wars.
Instead, the BBC points to conflicts that lasted only a few days and never escalated further. Furthermore, it is uncertain whether the peace agreements would hold in the long term.
For these reasons, there is significant debate about whether Trump truly deserves credit for resolving eight wars.
“It is a big but very fragile accomplishment”
Defense and foreign policy expert Michael O’Hanlon believes that “It is a big but very fragile accomplishment.” At the same time, he considers Trump to be the president who has exerted the greatest pressure on Iran, the BBC reports.
Nevertheless, it should be kept in mind that a peace agreement capable of lasting in the long run requires several difficult measures, such as disarmament and the establishment of a new government on Hamas’ side.
However, O’Hanlon points out that anyone who helps establish a two-state solution involving Iran deserves credit for the success.
