Britain’s political turmoil deepened after Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced his resignation, delivering another blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer as unrest grows inside the Labour Party.

The resignation follows heavy losses for Labour in recent local elections, which have intensified calls for Starmer to step down.

Confidence lost

Streeting confirmed his resignation in a letter published on X, formerly Twitter, saying he no longer had confidence in the prime minister’s leadership.

According to DR News, the departing health secretary blamed Labour’s poor election performance across Britain for his decision.

“Last week’s election results were unprecedented – both in terms of the scale of the defeat and the consequences of the defeat,” Streeting wrote.

He added that public dissatisfaction with the government had become a major factor behind Labour’s setbacks in England, Scotland and Wales.

Growing rebellion

The resignation comes as pressure continues to build around Starmer within his own party.

Several Labour figures have recently questioned his leadership following disappointing local election results and falling support among voters.

According to DR News, critics inside Labour believe the government has struggled to deliver promised political and economic changes quickly enough.

Streeting’s departure is expected to increase speculation about a possible leadership challenge in the coming months.

Political uncertainty

Starmer has so far resisted calls to resign and allies insist he intends to remain in office despite mounting criticism.

The resignation of such a senior cabinet figure, however, marks one of the biggest internal challenges of Starmer’s leadership since Labour returned to power.
