Google Translate has now been around for 20 years, but the app has evolved far beyond simple word-for-word translation.

According to BGR, the service now includes real-time conversations, camera translation, offline support and even live AI-powered interpreting.

Camera trick

One of the app’s most useful features allows users to instantly translate text using their phone camera.

By pointing the camera at signs, menus or documents, the app overlays translated text directly onto the screen.

The feature is especially useful while traveling in countries where street signs or restaurant menus are difficult to understand.

Google Translate uses Google Lens technology to identify and translate the text in real time.

Real conversations

The app also includes a conversation mode designed to let two people speak naturally in different languages.

Instead of manually pressing buttons between sentences, the app automatically detects who is speaking and translates both sides.

A face-to-face layout can split the screen so each person sees translations on their side of the phone.

The feature is often compared to the fictional “Universal Translator” from Star Trek.

Works offline

Google Translate can also function without an internet connection.

Users can download language packs directly onto their devices before traveling.

Once downloaded, many translation functions continue working offline, including some camera translation features.

That makes the app useful in airplanes, trains, remote areas or countries with limited mobile coverage.

Language learning

The app has increasingly become a language-learning tool as well as a translation service.

Users can listen to native pronunciation, view phonetic spellings and practice conversations directly inside the app.

Google has also added AI conversation exercises in select languages to help users improve listening and speaking skills.

The feature remains free, unlike some premium AI language-learning tools.

AI translation future

Google has continued integrating AI into Translate since switching to neural machine translation systems in 2016.

The app now also supports live transcription for speeches and continuous conversations.

One newer feature, Live Translate, can provide near real-time spoken translations similar to science-fiction interpreters.

While still limited in some regions, the technology is moving closer to seamless real-time communication across languages.
