When summer arrives, families usually just pick a spot on the map and pack their bags.

But for citizens of one massive country, the options are vanishing fast. Getting on a plane today means navigating a rapidly shrinking list of friendly borders.

A forgotten golden age

Russian airports will only offer direct flights to around 32 countries this summer. The Telegram channel Vazhnye Istorii reports that this dramatic drop is the direct result of heavy international sanctions and regional conflicts.

The numbers look especially bleak when compared to history. According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia cited by News Ukraine, the Soviet Union ran direct flights to roughly 100 different countries during the 1980s.

Even behind the infamous Iron Curtain, holidaymakers had more choices. The association notes that the current Russian flight network is significantly smaller than the old Soviet routes.

Unpopular holiday choices

A few planes are still flying to Asia and the Middle East. Holidaymakers can buy direct tickets to places like Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. They can also reach Türkiye, Serbia, and Georgia.

But very few of these remaining routes actually appeal to average tourists. The Russian Association of Tour Operators admits that only about 15 of the available countries see any real passenger demand for summer vacations.

Many traditional sunny escapes are completely cut off from the transport network. Flights remain grounded for formerly popular vacation spots like Cuba, Venezuela, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia because of ongoing global restrictions.

Economic walls close in

The shrinking aviation map is just one visible symptom of a larger national crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently announced a major intelligence find. He claims his teams uncovered secret Russian documents that point to severe economic troubles hiding behind the scenes.

Financial pressure continues to build from multiple directions on the world stage. Reuters reports that the United States recently extended a sanctions waiver specifically targeting Russian oil markets.

European leaders are also tightening the screws. The European Union just rolled out fresh sanctions against numerous Russian officials and organisations. Authorities accuse these specific groups of deporting Ukrainian children and forcing them into strict ideological indoctrination programmes.
