Explosions were reported in the Russian city of Yaroslavl early Monday following what local officials described as a Ukrainian drone attack.
According to the Kyiv Independent, the strikes may have targeted oil-related infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.
Blasts reported
Residents and local Russian media reported hearing explosions across parts of Yaroslavl during the morning hours.
Yaroslavl Oblast Governor Mikhail Yevrayev later confirmed the region had come under a drone attack.
Authorities temporarily restricted traffic on a major highway connecting the city with Moscow.
Officials urged residents to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes.
Moscow also targeted
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed Russian air defenses also intercepted several drones approaching the capital.
According to Sobyanin, four drones were allegedly shot down around Moscow overnight.
Russian officials said falling debris was reported after the interceptions.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from either incident.
Oil facilities focus
The Kyiv Independent noted Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil and energy infrastructure during long-range drone operations.
Kyiv argues such attacks are aimed at weakening Russia’s military and industrial capabilities.
Yaroslavl is home to major oil-processing infrastructure, including the Slavneft-YANOS refinery.
The full extent of any potential damage remains unclear.
Deep inside Russia
Yaroslavl lies roughly 700 kilometers from Ukraine’s border and northeast of Moscow.
The reported strike highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to hit targets far inside Russian territory.
Long-range drone warfare has become one of the defining features of the conflict over the past year.
Both Russia and Ukraine have sharply escalated aerial attacks targeting infrastructure and military-linked facilities.
War enters new phase
Ukraine has repeatedly framed strikes on Russian oil sites as part of a broader strategy to disrupt Moscow’s war economy.
Russia, meanwhile, continues launching large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The increasing range and frequency of attacks on both sides have intensified concerns about further escalation.
Analysts say drone warfare is rapidly reshaping the battlefield far beyond the front lines.
