A Ukrainian drone training centre has added Shahed interception missions to its custom GTA V simulator as part of efforts to support FPV drone pilot training.

A Ukrainian drone training centre has expanded its custom Grand Theft Auto V simulator to include missions targeting Shahed-type drones.
The project is designed to help FPV drone operators maintain skills and practice combat-style scenarios outside traditional military simulators.

Simulator upgrade

According to United24Media, the WeTrueGun training centre updated its GTA V-based FPV drone simulator using the FiveM multiplayer framework.

The modified environment allows users to search for and intercept airborne Shahed-type drones within simulated urban combat settings.

Operators can reportedly practice aerial pursuit, target acquisition and reaction speed while navigating through combat-style missions.

The centre said the project is intended to supplement, not replace, professional military drone simulators.

Training support

WeTrueGun stressed that specialised military systems such as “Obriy” remain the primary tools used in real interceptor crew training.

“Important clarification: in real interceptor crew training, specialized military simulators such as ‘Obriy’ are used,” the centre said in a statement cited by United24Media.

According to the group, the GTA-based project is mainly intended for maintaining FPV skills, experimentation and psychological decompression after operational training.

The centre said the game environment offers a more accessible and flexible setting for continued drone practice.

Drone ecosystem

According to United24Media, the simulator forms part of a broader FPV drone training programme operated by WeTrueGun for recruits preparing to serve in Ukraine’s Security and Defence Forces.

The organisation said recruits who sign military contracts after completing the course receive training free of charge.

Funding for the programme reportedly comes from charitable organisations, donors and the training centre itself.

WeTrueGun had previously adapted GTA V to help operators practice drone manoeuvring and combat engagement techniques.

Expanding technology

Ukraine has increasingly relied on FPV drones throughout the war, using them for reconnaissance, targeting and direct attacks against Russian forces.

The growing use of gaming-based simulators reflects wider efforts to rapidly train drone operators while reducing equipment costs and operational risks.

Military and volunteer groups across Ukraine have continued developing new methods to improve drone warfare capabilities, reports United24Media.
