Hyundai is recalling hundreds of thousands of vehicles after U.S. safety regulators discovered a software issue that could trigger sudden braking.

According to Mashable and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem affects both standard and hybrid Hyundai models built since 2024.

Unexpected braking

The issue involves software connected to the vehicles’ front cameras and collision-avoidance systems.

Regulators say the bug can accidentally activate automatic emergency braking even when there is no obstacle in front of the car.

The NHTSA documented 376 reports of unexpected braking between October 2024 and April 2026.

Officials warned the malfunction could increase the risk of crashes.

Affected models

The recall impacts more than 421,000 vehicles, including 2025-2026 Hyundai Tucson and Santa Cruz models.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Tucson are also included in the recall.

Additional Hyundai models affected by separate recalls include certain Elantra Hybrid vehicles as well as the electric Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9.

Owners are expected to receive official recall notices by mail starting July 17.

What drivers can do

Drivers can check whether their vehicle is affected through the NHTSA recall database using a VIN number or license plate.

Hyundai dealers will also provide software updates designed to fix the issue.

The recall comes during a broader wave of automotive safety actions across the industry, with the NHTSA recently issuing multiple recalls involving Ford, Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and General Motors.
