Sometimes a familiar home suddenly stops feeling safe.
As domestic politics grow increasingly turbulent, many households are searching for a reliable escape route.
Thousands are actively securing one right next door.
A rush for the exit
During the second year of Donald Trump’s new administration, a rapidly growing wave of anxious citizens desperately want out. Americans account for nearly half of all new Canadian citizenship applications. The surge reveals a severe hunger for a political alternative.
The official numbers paint a very clear picture of this exodus. Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship department approved over 4,000 global requests between December 2025 and March 2026. US applicants claimed nearly 2,000 of those spots.
The northern neighbor easily topped the list of hopeful arrivals. Mexico placed a distant second with roughly 900 applications during that same winter period. Bolivia and the United Kingdom followed far behind.
Digging up the roots
Finding a legal path north recently became much easier. A new Canadian policy called Bill C-3 expanded the old citizenship rules to include grandchildren and other descendants. You no longer need a parent born in the country to qualify.
Newsweek cited by Express first reported the underlying reasons driving this shift. Many applicants view the dual passport as a vital safety net. Some parents specifically told the magazine they worry about protecting their transgender children in today’s political climate.
This desire to flee reflects a much broader national trend. A 2024 Gallup survey revealed that one in five Americans explicitly wanted to emigrate. Young women between the ages of fifteen and forty-four drove a massive portion of that sudden spike in the data.
Buying family security
People simply want the freedom to jump ship if things get worse. William Hunnewell is a Seattle resident who recently applied using his great-grandfather’s roots in Saskatchewan.
He explained his motivation during an interview with Reuters. “The biggest thing is it gives our family options,” Hunnewell said. Now, he expects to wait up to a full year for the official government decision.
Immigration experts confidently predict this unprecedented cross-border rush will only accelerate throughout the remainder of 2026. The shared history between the two nations makes the move incredibly tempting. Voters simply want a safe sanctuary.
