A dramatic encounter between a high-profile politician and a prominent reporter has just demonstrated how quickly tensions can escalate when the cameras are rolling, reports LADbible.
A tense briefing
The drama unfolded during a White House press briefing on Wednesday as an executive order was being signed. What started as a standard question quickly derailed into a fiery personal attack.
According to LADBIBLE, a reporter asked about dropping a $1.776 billion fund. Instead of answering, Donald Trump shifted his focus to the network and the journalist.
He slammed the media outlet before turning his full attention to the correspondent. The room grew quiet as the criticism turned deeply personal.
Hatred in eyes
The target was CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins. Trump openly accused her of false reporting and mocked her for a lack of emotion.
“CNN’s a very corrupt organisation, with a corrupt reporter standing right there, never smiles,” he said, gesturing towards her.
“She never… a young beautiful woman who never smiles. I never see a smile off her face. I see her standing there with hatred in her eyes.” He claimed her anger came from successful policies like tax cuts.
Roots and caps
He then targeted her roots. “You used to be a conservative,” he said, adding, “She was a conservative from Alabama. Can you believe it?” Collins fired back that she was “still from Alabama”.
This was not the first time Collins faced this criticism. Back in February, a similar comment occurred during an Oval Office event.
“Look, CNN is thrilled,” Trump said then. He added, “She never smiles. Someday I’ll see her smile.”
Standing her ground
Network executives quickly defended their employee. A spokesperson told The New York Post that Collins “is an exceptional journalist, reporting every day from the White House and the field with real depth and tenacity”.
The network added: “She skilfully brings that reporting to the anchor chair and CNN platforms every day, which audiences around the world know they can trust,” emphasizing her skill.
Trump has a history of these encounters. He previously told a Bloomberg reporter “Quiet! Quiet, Piggy!” when asked about Jeffrey Epstein.
