When a massive sporting event captures the imagination of an entire city, everyone wants a piece of the action.

High-profile sporting events naturally attract some of the biggest names in politics, turning arenas into unexpected political stages. A historic championship series is about to begin, and the guest list is already generating controversy, reports Mirror U.S.

A historic return

The New York Knicks have made it to the 2026 NBA Finals for the first time in over two decades. Excitement is reaching a boiling point as fans prepare to face the San Antonio Spurs.

Madison Square Garden is preparing for a flood of famous faces. According to the Mirror U.S., both Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are expected to attend Game 3.

Trump has not officially confirmed his plans, but security teams are already conducting walkthroughs at the arena. Instead of sitting in celebrity row, reports indicate he will watch from a private suite.

Keeping his distance

The potential overlap has forced the city’s leader to clarify his plans. Mamdani, who currently enjoys a strong 50 percent approval rating according to Marist, wants no part of a joint appearance.

The mayor told reporters that any appearance he makes will be entirely independent. “If I go… I’ll be doing so separately,” Mamdani said when asked if he would sit beside Trump.

He doubled down on that stance during a chat with TMZ. “If the president went to a game, that’s his decision to make. If I go to the game, I’ll be doing so separately,” he noted.

The mayor also chose to stay neutral when asked about how the crowd might react to Trump’s arrival. “New Yorkers, we are an unpredictable people. I think I’d make a fool of myself if I wanted to make a prediction,” Mamdani stated.

Frosty reception feared

The crowd’s reaction remains a major question mark. New York is known for its heavily liberal leaning, which stands in sharp contrast to Trump’s conservative platform.

At the same time, an unpopular US conflict with Iran could fuel crowd frustration. Many observers believe Trump could face heavy booing if he shows his face at the stadium.

Still, the mayor insists everyone is welcome. He told ABC that the focus should remain on the court, with New York hosting Games 3, 4, and 6 of the historic series.
