Walking into a local discount shop usually means hunting for cheap bargains.

Most shoppers never stop to think about what lies beneath the concrete floor. But sometimes, an ordinary storefront can hide a massive secret right under everyone’s feet.

Suspicious shop workers

Federal agents recently uncovered a massive underground pathway connecting Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego, California. The Mirror US reported that the sophisticated tunnel stretched 870 feet long and reached a depth of 21 feet. It functioned as a hidden pipeline for moving weapons and narcotics.

The operation came to light after law enforcement noticed odd patterns at a “Buy 4 Less” store. According to reports from the Los Angeles Times, Homeland Security investigators started watching the business in December 2025. They spotted groups of workers constantly carting suitcases inside.

Real customers, however, barely ever visited the shop. Authorities monitored the location for months before concluding the raid on May 29. The secret pathway traveled across the international boundary, ending inside a home in Nueva Tijuana.

A massive haul

Inside, officers found a highly advanced setup. Investigators at Tijuana’s federal Attorney General’s Office noted that the corridor featured full ventilation, lighting, and an electronic sliding track built to move heavy cargo quickly across the border.

The raid yielded a staggering amount of contraband. Officers confiscated more than 2,269 pounds of cocaine, which prosecutors valued at nearly $45 million. Beyond the cocaine, agents also seized ammunition, electronics, and large quantities of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Homeland Security Investigations stated that the bust severely disrupted the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Four suspects now face federal charges for their roles in running the smuggling route.

Lights and sirens

Subterranean routes are a common tool for cartels on the southern border. According to the Justice Department, authorities have discovered 99 underground passages in this district since 1993. Yet, prosecutors emphasized this layout was exceptionally rare due to its size.

Officials praised the teamwork that brought down the network. “This investigation and seizure represent a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel,” Kevin Murphy, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in San Diego, said.

The legal consequences for the captured operators will be severe. Commenting on the raid, U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon said, “For these defendants, it wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel. It was lights and sirens.”
