Square Enix has launched Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. While the Switch 2 port is being hailed as an impressive 30fps technical achievement, Xbox players are being advised to avoid the game’s buggy 60fps performance mode.

Gamers who missed the original PlayStation 5 launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are finally getting their chance to explore Gaia. The massive, critically acclaimed RPG officially arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows platforms on June 3, 2026, bringing one of the generation’s most cinematic adventures to a vastly wider audience.

A technical marvel on Nintendo’s new handheld

Porting a demanding Unreal Engine 4 game to a portable platform is a notorious challenge, but early technical analysis indicates Square Enix has delivered an impressive feat of engineering. According to a comprehensive breakdown by Digital Foundry, the Switch 2 version of Rebirth significantly improves upon its pre-release demo, locking in a much more stable 30 frames-per-second target.

To achieve this on the handheld, the developers relied heavily on DLSS reconstruction to upscale internal resolutions ranging from 540p to 1080p when docked. While some visual trade-offs were necessary—including noticeable geometry pop-in and a reduction in NPC density in crowded areas like Kalm town—the game’s core visual integrity, physics, and dynamic lighting remain remarkably intact on the Switch 2.

Xbox players face performance mode struggles

While the Switch 2 port is drawing praise for its optimization, the Xbox Series versions are facing a slightly more mixed reception regarding frame rates.

As reported by Pure Xbox (citing Digital Foundry’s testing), the 30fps “Quality” mode on both the Xbox Series X and Series S is highly commendable, with the Series X achieving a pin-sharp native 4K resolution. However, the 60fps “Performance” mode has left some players frustrated. Analysts noted persistent unaddressed frame drops during combat and a noticeable “camera judder” bug that makes the image stutter even when the frame rate is technically stable, prompting many reviewers to recommend sticking to the 30fps mode for the smoothest experience.
