Global trade routes are fragile lines on a map, and a single choke point can throw the entire world economy into chaos.

When geopolitical tensions spike near these narrow waterways, words can quickly turn into warnings of total destruction. The latest war of words over a vital shipping lane has reached a boiling point, reports Onet.

A fiery warning

President Donald Trump has issued a fierce warning to Tehran over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with Fox News, Trump threatened to “blow the hell out of Iran” if the nation tries to shut down the vital waterway.

The warning was personal and direct. According to Onet, Trump emphasized that he had already passed the message to Iranian leaders.

“Close it, and you won’t have a country. You won’t even go back to your own fucking country,” the US president said.

Beyond military action, Trump proposed an economic takeover. If ongoing 60-day negotiations for a final agreement fail, he suggested the US could “take over” the passage and force ships to pay transit fees.

Calling the bluff

The dispute centers on a vital corridor for global oil. Trump claimed that 19 million barrels of oil passed through the strait on Saturday, continuing an upward trend reported by his administration.

However, shipping data tells a mixed story. Fox News cited data from Windward showing that traffic actually dropped on Sunday, with only 12 ships passing through compared to at least 21 on Saturday. Meanwhile, US Central Command tracked at least 55 vessels on Saturday.

Iranian officials quickly dismissed the American rhetoric. Ebrahim Rezaei, a spokesman for Iran’s national security committee, took to X to call the threats “empty bluffs.”

Writing on social media, Rezaei stated that “only a fool would make such utterly empty claims” before adding that “these bluffs have expired.” He argued that the US lacked the courage to take control of the waterway during recent conflicts.

Talks hitting a wall

These aggressive statements are already having real-world consequences. The threats landed just as US and Iranian diplomats were meeting in Switzerland to negotiate a final deal.

The timing could not be worse. CNN reported that Trump’s fiery comments have already caused a total stalemate in the newly started talks.

The tension began after Iran announced it would close the strait following Israeli clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite Iran’s words, the US military insists the waters are still open for business.
