Political power can shift in the blink of an eye, turning high-ranking officials into prisoners of the state they once ran.

When leaders abuse their authority, the legal system often takes years to untangle the mess and deliver accountability. A major democracy is currently testing the limits of its laws as a massive political scandal reaches its final reckoning, reports DR News.

A massive penalty

A former top official in South Korea will spend decades behind bars. According to DR News, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced former Justice Minister Park Sung Jae to 25 years in prison. The punishment stems from a short-lived political crisis.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the ruling follows a string of serious charges. Prosecutors accused the former minister of playing a central role in an armed rebellion. He also allegedly abused his official power.

Park is not alone. The scandal has already ruined the highest levels of the past government.

Falling like dominoes

The main figure in the crisis was former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Convicted in February for leading the rebellion, he remains behind bars while he appeals. DR News noted that Yoon received an additional 30-year sentence this June for a separate matter.

Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo also faced the courts. In January, judges handed Han a 23-year sentence. His crime was failing to hold a mandatory cabinet meeting required by law to declare an emergency.

The entire legal fallout stems from a chaotic night that lasted only six hours. It nearly broke the nation.

Six chaotic hours

When the former president suddenly locked down the country in December 2024, he claimed the extreme step was “necessary to protect our country.” The move shocked the public and immediately sparked widespread protests.

Yoon defended his actions in a televised speech to the nation. “With this state of emergency, I will rebuild the free Republic of Korea and eradicate the pro-North Korean forces that are leading our country into the abyss,” Yoon said at the time.

Now, the courts are mapping out a different future for these men. The message is clear. Nobody is above the law.
