The consipracy theorist might have eluded the pay-out, but he still owes more than a billion dollars to the parent’s of the Sandy Hook tragedy.
It has been years since Alex Jones was found liable for spreading untruthful and harmful conspiracy theories about the horrible shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
He has since been found liable by multiple courts and owes the families affected by his statements a large amount of money.
Meanwhile, Jones just got a win in court to avoid paying some of what he owes.
Cap on damages
An appeals court in Texas has reduced the payout conspiracy theorist Alex Jones owes to two Sandy Hook parents. A trial jury previously ordered Jones to pay roughly $50 million to his victims.
The Third District Court of Appeals ruled that the trial judge made an error by letting parents request higher damages months after the 2022 trial. Under Texas law, a statutory cap limits these awards. That means each parent will receive $750,000 in exemplary damages instead.
The court explained, “We conclude that the trial court abused its discretion by allowing the post-verdict amendment of the petition and, consequently, allowing the judgment to exceed the statutory cap on exemplary damages on grounds not pleaded or found by the jury.” Jones must still pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages, plus interest and fees.
Jones still owes parents over a billion
Lawyers for the parents downplayed the reduction. Mark Bankston, an attorney for Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, emphasized that Jones remains in deep financial trouble.
Bankston stated, “Jones still faces over a billion dollars of liability, so this changes absolutely nothing.” He added, “All it does is highlight the absurdity of Texas law.”
Jones owes $1.4 billion from a separate Connecticut case that pushed him into bankruptcy. The US Supreme Court declined to overturn that judgment. Attorney Chris Mattei said the case win in Connecticut will still benefit the Texas families.
Years of harassment
The lawsuits arose after Jones falsely claimed the 2012 Newtown Elementary School shooting was a hoax perpetrated by “child actors” and that “no one actually died.”
In reality, the tragedy took the lives of 20 children and six adults. His claims sparked years of severe harassment against the grieving parents and families. Jones lost by default after ignoring discovery rules during the trial.
The mounting legal costs have crushed his media business. In May 2025, Infowars stopped broadcasting and permanently closed its main offices in Austin after 27 years of promoting conspiracy theories on various platforms.
Since then, the parody website The Onion has taken over Infowars to make fun of the conspiracy theorist on his former platform with the blessing of the parents.
The AP reports that the families still have not received any money from Jones as a result of the lawsuits and that he remains on the airwaves, just now on a different website and streaming platform.
