Major fiber project to strengthen australia’s digital connections
Australia is preparing for a sharp increase in demand for digital services as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data centers continue to expand. That growth is putting pressure on the country’s existing infrastructure and creating a need for faster and more reliable connections.
A fiber route
Cimic, the Australian subsidiary of ACS, has been chosen by digital infrastructure company Vocus to help build a new fiber optic network worth 500 million Australian dollars, or about 308 million euros, according to el Economista.
The project is called the Australian Digital Infrastructure Platform. Its aim is to strengthen Australia’s digital network and prepare the country for rising demand from artificial intelligence, data centers and cloud services.
Cimic will carry out the initial work through its subsidiary UGL. The first stage is due to begin in August and will focus on developing a fiber route between Sydney and Melbourne.
UGL will be involved in several parts of the project. Its work will include design, engineering, field checks, project management and cost estimates.
The Sydney to Melbourne connection will be the first route developed under the wider project. It is expected to form part of a much larger network designed to improve connections between Australia’s major population centers.
Vocus plans to build high-capacity fiber infrastructure across several areas. The project will include submarine cables, connections between major cities and metropolitan networks.
The company also expects the network to support growing digital activity across Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
High-capacity digital infrastructure
Demand for reliable connections has grown as businesses increasingly depend on cloud services and large data centers. Artificial intelligence is also creating new demands because AI systems require large amounts of computing power and data.
Cimic Chief Executive Jason Spears said reliable and high-capacity digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for Australia’s economy and productivity.
He said the company was pleased to support Vocus on a project that is important to the country.
The project is also expected to support the expansion of newer technologies. These include artificial intelligence, cloud computing and hyperscale data centers, which are very large facilities designed to handle huge amounts of digital information.
The first construction work is now moving ahead, with the Sydney to Melbourne route set to become the starting point for the wider network.
For Australia, the project comes at a time when digital services are becoming a bigger part of everyday life and business. Stronger fiber connections could help the country handle the growing amount of data needed by companies, consumers and emerging technologies.
