A major weather warning was just issued by the United Kingdom’s national weather and climate service that could upend multiple countries on Thursday.
A massive weather system is currently pushing warm, humid air straight across large swathes of England and Wales.
The sudden atmospheric shift brings a rising threat of torrential downpours and frequent lightning strikes that could cause widespread travel disruptions nationwide.
The skies open up
Met Office forecasters have issued yellow weather warnings covering most of both countries. Officials warn that downpours could transform roads into treacherous waterways that could be flooded within minutes.
The weather warnings continue from yesterday as the southern part of England saw plenty of rain overnight.
The warning will continue until 22:00, which could cause traffic disruptions, severe flooding, and hazardous conditions for the population.
Severe flood risk
In some heavily affected spots, up to 50 millimetres of rain could cascade down in just two or three hours. That deluge could overwhelm drainage systems, leaving low-lying areas vulnerable.
Drivers face sudden road closures. In addition, large hail measuring up to two centimetres and strong wind gusts could also be a factor on Thursday.
The warning stretches to large parts of England through Manchester, Oxford, and Hull, as well as a large part of Wales.
“On Thursday, slow-moving heavy and thundery rain may bring prolonged rainfall to some areas, increasing the risk of localised impacts,” Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington noted.
Prepare for impact
Eastern high ground could see over 75 millimetres of water over a twelve-hour span. Fast-flowing floodwater could even present a small danger to human life.
“There remains some uncertainty around where the heaviest rain will fall, so it is important to keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings,” Willington said.
With severe conditions expected to linger across two full days, commuters and residents are being urged to monitor transit updates and secure vulnerable property early.
