During a radio interview, Donald Trump talked about his thought process about honoring the late, great Dolly Parton and revealed the real reason behind it.
Two days ago, the country music icon Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80.
People all over the world poured out tributes to the legendary entertainer.
Even the President of the United States chose to go out of his way to honor Parton. Yesterday, he went on a radio show and spilled the reason behind it all. Turns out, it was all about him.
According to Trump, Parton ‘liked’ him
Donald Trump went on host Glenn Beck’s talk show. Beck is an ultra-conservative commentator who is known for promoting elaborate conspiracy theories on his shows.
After prefacing his remarks by stating that Dolly Parton was not a political person, Trump went on to claim that she was very fond of the president.
“She was unique. I mean, she was amazing, and to lose her, it’s like losing a member of the family. She really liked me, I will tell you,” Trump said to Beck.
Trump explains the reason behind his tribute
Trump announced that flags across America would be flown at half-staff for a whole week. Trump turned the conversation back on himself and hinted that Parton was secretly a Republican.
“She was of the opinion, you know, the 50% — who needs to lose, I don’t think it’s 50. I think it’s probably 20% of the fans, okay?” Trump said about his thinking that Parton would potentially lose 50% of her fans if she came out as a Republican and a Trump fan.
Trump also added, “But she was a great person, and she was just a nice person. You know, I liked her a lot, and I thought it was a natural thing to lower the flags.”
Parton was never a political person
Dolly Parton was famously apolitical and said so herself. She repeatedly said in interviews that she “don’t do politics,” and refused to accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom from both Joe Biden and Trump.
Trump seemed to agree with that in the radio interview. “I knew her a little bit. She wasn’t a very political person.”
Regardless, over the years Dolly Parton was embraced as a gay icon, gave generously to LGBTQ+ causes, and was widely regarded as an ally to the marginalized groups.
