AI has been used to create a potentially game-changing advancement in the medical field.
Traditional ECGs have tracked heart rhythms for over a hundred years.
They spot heart attacks easily, but detecting heart failure or valve disease has always required an expensive ultrasound scan that takes months to get.
That wait could be erased soon.
A monumental breakthrough
Researchers have developed a groundbreaking artificial intelligence system that spots major heart conditions in seconds. It reads standard electrocardiograms, known as ECGs. The technology uncovers hidden warning signs that human doctors often miss.
The new algorithm flags high-risk patients almost instantly. Scientists presented their findings at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich.
The numbers back up the hype. In a US trial involving 67,000 patients, the tool identified up to 81% of heart failure cases.
Fast-tracking patients
Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, clinical director at the British Heart Foundation, praised the breakthrough. “It is exciting to see that AI can now deliver a read-out from an ECG in what feels like the blink of an eye,” she said.
“When it comes to the heart, earlier diagnosis and treatment saves and improves lives,” Babu-Narayan added.
Professor Fu Siong Ng of Imperial College London stressed how critical timing is for patients. “Patients can often wait several months for a heart ultrasound scan after being referred for one by their doctor,” he explained.
Life-saving ECGs
“This makes it exciting that our technology could identify patients most at risk of heart failure and heart valve disease, so they could be prioritised for scans faster and more urgently,” Ng said.
Dr Ahmed El-Medany of Imperial College London dubbed the innovation “superhuman AI,” with the team already designing handheld versions for doctors.
Around one billion ECGs are performed worldwide each year, meaning automated software could quietly flag danger before severe symptoms strike.
