Romania and other European Union countries summoned Russian diplomats following a sabotage operation at a German airport.
Romania and several European Union nations are summoning Russian diplomats to their foreign ministries. This coordinated diplomatic action responds to a sabotage operation in Germany. Officials intend to deliver a unified message condemning ongoing hybrid warfare activities across the continent.
Responding to German sabotage
The diplomatic summons follow a drone incident at the Leipzig airport. According to Digi24, German authorities determined that Russia bears responsibility for this sabotage attempt. Germany became the first country to summon the Russian ambassador to its Foreign Ministry.
Berlin also announced countermeasures in response to the attack. As reported by Digi24, the government will close the Russian Consulate General located in Bonn. In retaliation, Moscow took a mirror measure by summoning the German diplomatic representative.
Other European nations quickly followed Germany’s lead in protesting the incident. According to Digi24, France summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Authorities in Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Portugal also summoned their respective Russian ambassadors.
Taking action in Romania
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release addressing the situation. As noted by Digi24, Bucharest decided to summon the Moscow ambassador for a formal meeting. Officials aim to convey that Romania will not tolerate these hybrid actions.
Romanian leaders emphasized the need for collective action among allies. According to Digi24, official Oana Țoiu stated on social media that member states are acting firmly together. She added that deterrence requires the will to impose a cost on the aggressor.

The official stressed that these provocations will not go unanswered. As highlighted by Digi24, she declared, “Our message is clear: we will not tolerate Russia’s hybrid actions and we will respond unitedly.” She affirmed that Romania stands in full solidarity with Germany.
Demonstrating European solidarity
The Romanian government released an additional statement expressing support for Berlin. According to Digi24, the Executive transmitted this message of solidarity via the X platform on Tuesday. The statement directly addressed the attribution of the Leipzig incident to the Russian state.
