A polite decline
Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently faced a harsh political reality. Several candidates from her own party are openly rejecting her help as the midterm elections approach.
According to a recent Politico report cited by Huffpost, Democratic candidates running in rural areas and deep red states are actively dodging her endorsement offers. A few campaigns have even asked her to stay away from their races entirely.
The uncomfortable topic came up during a television interview on Thursday. Peter Alexander asked Harris about this growing trend of rejection while hosting MS NOW’s “State of Play” broadcast, which originally focused on honoring activist Gloria Steinem.
Eyes on the prize
Harris did not seem visibly offended by the widespread brush-offs. Instead, the 2024 presidential candidate focused her answers entirely on the upcoming midterm results.
“Listen, Peter, we need to win, OK? Bottom line, we need to win,” Harris said during the broadcast.
She quickly pointed out her own extensive political background to validate her perspective. She noted, “I have run locally, I’ve run for statewide office, and obviously nationally.”
Despite her deep resume, Harris admitted that local politicians understand their own voters best. She explained that she expects nothing less than candidates doing exactly what they need to secure a victory in their home districts.
Pushing the agenda
The California native emphasized that defeating Republican power remains her ultimate focus right now. She desperately wants to see a strong legislative check placed on President Donald Trump.
“I look forward to being on the trail and helping folks where I can be helpful, but we have got to put a check on this lawless administration and deliver what Americans need and deserve: lower costs, affordable healthcare, affordable childcare, you name it,” Harris told Alexander.
She then repeated her willingness to take a back seat. “So I support them in doing whatever they need to do to win,” she concluded.
Local strategy first
This quiet resistance from state-level politicians makes strategic sense on the ground. According to the Politico report, these candidates want to keep the conversation tightly focused on local issues rather than national party drama.
National endorsements often carry heavy baggage in conservative-leaning states. Kansas Democratic Senate nominee Adam Hamilton summarized the mood perfectly.
He spoke bluntly to Politico about why a West Coast endorsement could severely backfire in the Midwest. “Having somebody from California come in and try to tell Kansans who they should vote for is a pretty bad idea,” Hamilton said.
