A young man took his life last week. Now the local community in Ohio is saying that Trump’s immigration policies were instrumental in this tragedy.
The Trump administration has ramped up efforts to enforce a stricter immigration policy during Trump’s second term.
That includes a more visible Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence on the street and a much harder crackdown on canceling protected statuses for immigrants.
That puts a lot of pressure on immigrants in America. A young man just took his own life because of it.
A young honors student takes his own life
Pierre Damas Bel was just 20 years old when he took his life last week. He arrived in America in 2024 alongside his parents and resided in Springfield, Ohio, after they fled Haitian violence three years earlier.
Bel thrived in school. He graduated with honors and was planning to study medicine.
But all of that changed when ICE stripped him and his family of Temporary Protected Status alongside 350,000 other Haitians living in the US. That protection is only given to people fleeing countries that are not safe to return to.
To keep track of Bel before his asylum hearing, ICE officers put an electronic GPS monitor on his leg. He was not under house arrest; instead, the ankle monitor was used to track his every move.
His father, Pierres Ronal Bel, said the device stopped his son from doing anything social like sports of leisure. “He felt like he was treated like an animal,” his father wrote, according to The Washington Post.
A tragedy unfolds
On Monday morning, Bel called his father early. “I’m not feeling okay,” he said. His father urged him to come home, but to no avail.
After continued humiliation, Bel could not take it anymore.
He took his car and stopped on the highway, stepped into oncoming traffic, and was struck by a truck. Police later told his family that their son “threw himself under a truck.”
Migrant advocates blamed ICE and the Trump administration’s immigration doctrine for Bel’s death. Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance stated, “These policies are what caused his untimely death.”
Consequences of strict immigration policies
People with expertise in protecting immigrants’ human rights in America say that instances like Bel’s suicide will continue to happen when a government puts so much stress on an immigrant community.
The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration has been ordering immigrants from Haiti into ICE offices to put ankle monitors on them, so ICE can track their movements if officers need to suddenly deport them.
Bel posted online about his the pain he was in. “I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone,” he wrote, adding that the ankle monitor left him with “a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.”
