The United Kingdom artificial intelligence minister warned that nations must harden their defenses against emerging technological risks. According to Fortune, Kanishka Narayan delivered this message after researchers suggested a human extinction event could happen within the decade. A former Anthropic employee sparked the discussion by warning that technology developers earnestly believe artificial intelligence could kill humanity.
Other prominent technology figures quickly echoed these severe existential concerns regarding advanced laboratory research. An active Anthropic scientist publicly agreed with the initial warning while estimating the catastrophic risk at greater than 10%. Microsoft founder Bill Gates also noted that advanced systems in the wrong hands could cause one billion deaths.
Narayan emphasized that governments must take these warnings seriously when they originate directly from laboratory scientists. The British minister stated that current testing protocols remain insufficient to handle the rapidly growing threats. The president warned that controlling the pace of American research would hand China a significant strategic advantage.
Trump noted that America currently leads China and intends to maintain that position without applying regulatory brakes. Consequently, the White House reportedly warned G20 members to maintain a hands-off approach to global regulations. This executive stance directly contrasts with growing demands from both American political parties for new legislation targeting frontier laboratories.

While acknowledging existential warnings, Narayan remains primarily focused on immediate practical threats facing modern organizations. The cabinet minister highlighted a secular uplift in cybersecurity threats and the dangerous proliferation of biochemical tools.
