They will arrive in a luxurious white-and-gold presentation box.

Getting ready for an international trip often starts with hunting down a small booklet.

That familiar blue document has looked roughly the same for generations. Soon, the entire system is getting a dramatic visual makeover.

A golden makeover

Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently hosted an event that felt like a tech keynote. He revealed a massive redesign for the United States passport, according to HuffPost.

The proposed cover embraces a bold aesthetic, featuring a massive Great Seal splashed across the front.

Rubio proudly explained the visual shift. “The Great Seal is larger, it’s more prominent, it’s more gold,” he stated during the presentation.

Passport historian Tom Topol told the outlet that the new cover is “mostly eagle, barely passport.” The interior pages will also feature something completely unprecedented. For the first time ever, travelers will see a portrait of the sitting president printed directly inside.

Outrage over the box

The changes go beyond the booklet itself. When the new documents start shipping in 2028, they will arrive in a luxurious white-and-gold presentation box.

That specific detail instantly sparked intense frustration online. Many Americans are currently struggling to afford basic daily necessities, making the fancy packaging feel completely out of touch.

One angry user on X summarized the backlash. “Passports will no longer arrive in cheap, cost-effective mail. Instead, taxpayers get to fund a pretty little package lined with ‘gold’ accents, because nothing covers the electric bill, groceries, or gas like a fancy envelope,” they wrote.

Another commenter simply observed that the travel document is now being treated like luxury technology. “The U.S passport is now being sold as if it were an iPhone,” the user noted.

Moving the system online

Underneath the controversial aesthetics, the State Department is pushing forward with genuine technological upgrades. The agency desperately wants to streamline a notoriously clunky system.

People applying for their very first passport will soon be able to do everything entirely online. This completely removes the old requirement of visiting a physical office with printed paper forms.

The digital portal will even verify your uploaded selfie in real time. For many experts, these practical updates are the real story.

“The online application is the part I’d call real progress,” Topol told HuffPost. He expects the digital portal will matter far more to travelers than the golden eagle on the cover.
