The Duchess of Sussex met Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai for afternoon tea at Claridge’s in London.

The Duchess of Sussex made a rare public appearance in central London on Wednesday, meeting Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai for afternoon tea at Claridge’s hotel in Mayfair.

According to reports by the Daily Mail, the pair dined in the hotel’s Foyer and Reading Room accompanied by personal security officers.

Upon leaving the venue, the two were seen embracing before parting ways.

The Duchess opted for high-end designer pieces for the occasion, including a camel coat from Tove Studio and a Chanel handbag, as reported by the outlet.

She balanced her attire by also carrying a canvas tote bag depicting women wearing hijabs.

Focus on Education

The meeting highlights a shared focus on girls’ access to education, following their previous collaboration during an online panel in 2020 for International Day of the Girl, according to the Daily Mail.

During that virtual discussion, the Duchess emphasized the broader societal impact of female empowerment, stating that “when young girls have access to education, everyone wins, and everyone succeeds.”

Malala echoed those core values following their original meeting, noting that “Meghan and I are on the same page: we both believe that when girls have access to education, everyone wins.”

A New Chapter in Britain

The Mayfair outing marks Meghan’s first public appearance in central London since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

The appearance comes as Meghan and Prince Harry begin a new chapter in Britain after returning with their children in August.

According to PEOPLE, the family is based in a private residence outside London while continuing to maintain their home in California.

Meghan’s meeting with Yousafzai is therefore one of the first public indications of her activities in the UK since the family’s return, although the couple have otherwise kept a relatively low public profile.
