An unexpected gift
President Donald Trump spent his Thursday handing out the prestigious National Medal of Science. He gave the top government honor directly to tech billionaire Elon Musk during a highly anticipated event.
But the spotlight did not stay entirely on the guest of honor. According to a report by the Irish Star, the ceremony featured a surprise twist for the president himself.
The event host interrupted the planned schedule to present a large framed object. He revealed it was the exact same science medal once awarded to the president’s relative.
“So, Mr. President, we have been able to find the medal from your uncle, and we here want to present it to you in a beautiful frame,” the presenter said on stage.
Fierce online reaction
Social media quickly lit up with sharp opinions about the unusual presentation. Many critics argued the commander-in-chief was essentially handed a consolation prize.
Observers pointed out that the actual scientific achievement belonged to someone else entirely. The late John G. Trump did real radiation research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Mirror US highlighted a particularly brutal comment from an online viewer. The user noted that the award was meant to celebrate genuine living innovators.
“Presidents have handed out the National Medal of Science for decades,” the user wrote. They added, “The uncle he mentions, John G. Trump, actually received it posthumously in the 1980s for real radiation research at MIT. The ceremony honored living innovators, not a participation trophy for the president”.
A frosty exchange
The surprise presentation only added to an already strange atmosphere. The Irish Star noted that the two men struggled to make eye contact throughout the event.
Trump read out the official citation for Musk with a stern expression. He praised the billionaire for “engineering achievements of extraordinary ambition and scale” that push the frontiers of space.
Despite those glowing words, the physical interaction remained completely stiff. The president offered a quick pat on the back, but the old warmth between the two seemed entirely absent.
Just days before the ceremony, the president shared a social media post openly praising the tech boss. By Thursday, that brief moment of friendship appeared completely frozen over once again.
