NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said ‘Abolish ICE’ after a disguised federal agent shot an unarmed man near a 5-year-old child in the Bronx.
While Mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani has pledged that he will fight tooth and nail to keep ICE out of the five boroughs’ neighborhoods, the Trump administration keeps ramping up its ICE presence on a federal level in NYC.
The increased presence almost turned deadly Thursday evening in the Bronx when a federal agent opened fire during a street stop. Police confirmed that a 28-year-old man was wounded and hospitalized.
A five-year-old child was inside the vehicle during the shooting. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers later found the child safe with a family member after a wellness check.
An ICE agent was in disguise
ICE said agents were targeting an undocumented man from the Dominican Republic. DHS alleged he had gang ties, though officials gave no immediate proof of his background.
In a social media statement, federal authorities wrote, “During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured.”
But as social media posts indicate, the ICE agent who is alleged to have shot the unarmed man was posing as a construction worker while carrying an assault rifle.
Fury on the streets
Local residents quickly gathered alongside community groups to protest the action. Demonstrators later marched toward the hospital, where barricades were set up and brief clashes occurred with police.
Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson joined the crowd to voice her outrage. According to The Guardian, she urged residents to organize, saying, “There are more of us than there are of them. I want this to be a moment that we turn into a movement.”
Immigration advocates called for an independent inquiry. Murad Awawdeh of the New York Immigration Coalition told The Guardian, “The pain that you’re witnessing is people who are witnessing their neighbors, their family members, their friends being ripped away.”
Mamdani on the phone with Trump
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also turned up at the protest, where he launched a sharp response against federal authorities following the shooting. He demanded an immediate end to local operations and ended his press conference by saying, “Abolish ICE.”
Mamdani also revealed that he spoke directly with the president. “I have been on the phone with President Trump and [Homeland Security] Secretary Mullin negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot. Those negotiations were unsuccessful,” Mamdani told a press conference.
The shooting comes a day after CNN reported that ICE agents have been told to increase their daily immigration arrests right before the midterms.
