A visit to a popular wildlife attraction in northern England ended in tragedy on Saturday afternoon, prompting an emergency response and the evacuation of visitors.
Police have launched an investigation into the fatal incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster reports The Guardian.
Fatal Tiger Attack
According to The Guardian, a man died after entering a tiger enclosure at approximately 1.35pm on October 10.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the animal attacked him, causing severe injuries. Ambulance crews, an air ambulance and a doctor attended, but medical efforts could not save his life.
The man’s relatives have been notified, with specialist officers providing support.
Police confirmed that the tiger was unharmed and remained inside its enclosure. Authorities said there was no continuing danger to visitors.
Wildlife Park Evacuated
Following the attack, visitors were evacuated while emergency personnel and investigators attended the scene.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that its emergency procedures had been activated and said it was cooperating with police to establish the circumstances.
“The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority,” the park said in a statement.
The attraction was closed for the remainder of the weekend, according to Sky News.
Police Investigation Continues
Footage apparently showing the attack has circulated online, prompting South Yorkshire Police to discourage people from sharing the disturbing recordings.
The wildlife park opened in 2009, with its Land of the Tigers attraction introduced two years later.
The specially designed two-acre habitat houses endangered Amur tigers and includes elevated viewing areas for visitors.
Investigators have not publicly established why the man entered the restricted enclosure or exactly how he gained access. Further inquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing.
