The new Tom Cruise film “Digger” is projected to lose 245 million dollars, making it one of the biggest box office bombs in Hollywood history.

Warner Bros. recently released the dark comedy “Digger” starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. According to Fortune, the film opened to an underwhelming eight million dollars at the domestic box office. This disastrous debut ranks among the worst opening weekends of the veteran actor’s extensive Hollywood career.

The production budget originally sat at 125 million dollars before ballooning to approximately 180 million dollars. The studio subsequently spent an additional 100 million dollars on a global marketing campaign centered around its lead star. Because theaters keep roughly half of all ticket sales, Variety reports the film needs 350 million dollars globally to break even.

Ticket sales suffered a massive 60% drop during the second weekend in theaters. The film has currently grossed 35 million dollars worldwide and is projected to finish its run at around 50 million dollars. Industry analysts expect the project to lose roughly 245 million dollars during its theatrical run.

Critical reception and unconventional marketing

The offbeat tone and arthouse sensibility made the film a difficult sell for mainstream blockbuster audiences. Critics remained sharply divided on the project, resulting in a 52% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. Opening-night crowds awarded the movie a C+ CinemaScore, which typically indicates extremely weak word of mouth.

Warner Bros. attempted to preempt the negative press by launching a highly unconventional advertising campaign. The studio released promotional materials juxtaposing scathing reactions against glowing praise to urge audiences to decide for themselves. These advertisements placed words like “Masterpiece” and “Brilliant” directly next to descriptions like “Unpleasant” and “Baffling”.

Several prominent Hollywood figures quickly championed the controversial film across various social media platforms. Celebrities including Anne Hathaway, Jane Fonda, and Guillermo del Toro publicly praised the creative endeavor. Despite this high-profile industry support, the endorsements completely failed to improve the disastrous box office returns.

Corporate transition and historic comparisons

This financial disaster arrives at a highly sensitive moment for the historic Warner Bros. studio. The film served as the final release before Paramount Skydance officially closed its 110 billion dollar acquisition on the sixth of October. The newly combined entertainment company now operates simply under the name Skydance.

Just one year ago, the studio enjoyed a historic hot streak with major hits like “Sinners” and “Weapons”. However, 2026 has delivered a painful string of costly cinematic disappointments for the company. Major financial failures like “The Bride” and “Supergirl” directly preceded this latest box office bomb.

Ranking historical box office failures remains difficult because Hollywood studios closely guard their official production budgets. However, a 245 million dollar loss easily places this release ahead of notorious historical flops like “John Carter” and “The Lone Ranger”. This massive financial crater even surpasses the inflation-adjusted losses of the infamous 1980 Western “Heaven’s Gate”.
