Federal authorities searched Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington residence early Monday morning amid a probe into her immigration paperwork.
A federal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar has heightened tensions between House Republicans and Democrats just weeks before the upcoming election.
Earlier this week, federal authorities searched Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington residence, confiscating her mobile phone along with other personal items.
Following the search, a top House Republican demanded prison time and deportation for the Minnesota lawmaker if investigators prove she committed immigration fraud.
At the center of the investigation is her status in 2000, when her father gained citizenship.
While minors automatically received citizenship alongside their parents, new allegations claim Omar was already 18 at the time and should have filed a separate application.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer insisted that the court-sanctioned search warrant shows authorities have a solid legal basis.
“I would say, first, she should probably serve time in the gray bar motel and then get the hell out of here. She should go back to where she came from,” Emmer told Fox News, adding that she belongs at the back of the line if she lied.
Omar rejects allegations
Omar firmly rejects every allegation of wrongdoing. Following the morning raid, the progressive lawmaker took to social media to denounce the probe as political payback right before Election Day.
“Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote on X, emphasizing that Donald Trump has targeted her for a decade.
She declared, “I will not be silenced,” according to Fox News.
Top House Democrats quickly backed her stance, calling the search deeply concerning.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries released a joint statement describing the raid as a politically motivated misuse of federal law enforcement.
Emmer dismissed those claims, pointing out that a judge had to approve the search warrant first.
He argued that any warrant targeting a sitting lawmaker undergoes intense judicial scrutiny, demonstrating the seriousness of the probe and adding that it could mark the start of holding Omar accountable.
Local Community Reacts
The raid has also sparked strong reactions in Omar’s home district in Minnesota, particularly among the local Somali American community.
As we have previously reported, Jamal Osman, vice president of the Minneapolis City Council, publicly criticized the administration’s actions, calling the operation an attempt to intimidate the local community.
Other local residents described the search as a political effort to humiliate the congresswoman just before the vote.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump denied directing the operation, stating that decisions regarding the investigation rest entirely with federal prosecutors, though he reiterated his criticism of Omar.
With the election approaching, critics continue to question whether the timing of the raid aligns with Justice Department guidelines regarding high-profile public actions close to an election.
