The US conflict with Iran significantly shaped the outcome of the American midterm elections.

Foreign military campaigns can quickly turn into political liabilities at home.

Following the recent US midterm elections, the conflict between Washington and Iran has moved to the center of discussions surrounding the vote’s outcome.

Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, argued on social media that the fallout in Washington was entirely self-inflicted.

He pointed directly to the current administration’s foreign policy as the decisive factor behind domestic political shifts.

“The unjustifiable aggression against Iran significantly influenced domestic developments in the US. It was a free choice of the current US Administration,” Ulyanov stated on X, according to a report by Russian news agency TASS.

Admissions from the White House

The assessment that foreign hostilities shaped the election did not come solely from foreign critics.

Even inside the White House, the cost of the confrontation was acknowledged in the wake of the vote.

US President Donald Trump conceded that the Republican Party’s setback at the ballot box was tied directly to the confrontation abroad.

According to the TASS report, Trump recognized that the party’s midterm defeat was “largely” due to the war with Iran.

By linking the losses directly to the conflict, the administration confirmed that overseas operations played a defining role in shaping the political landscape back home.

Rising Fuel Prices Turned the War Into a Domestic Liability

Beyond the military and diplomatic consequences, the conflict with Iran also created an economic burden that became increasingly difficult for Republicans to defend.

According to Reuters, the war contributed to a rise in gasoline prices, adding to voters’ concerns about the cost of living ahead of the midterm elections.

The issue became particularly damaging because higher fuel costs affected ordinary households directly, turning a foreign policy decision into a daily financial concern for millions of Americans.

Vice President JD Vance also attributed the Republican defeat to the war, reinforcing the growing recognition within the administration that its military campaign had become a significant political liability at home.

Trump, however, maintained that the operation was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and insisted he would make the same decision again.
