Election fallout triggers Wall Street panic: Did voters just derail the AI race?

Fears of tighter AI regulation and higher interest rates have pushed the tech-heavy Nasdaq into a correction.

A steep selloff across Wall Street pushed the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite into a technical correction on Thursday, as growing regulatory uncertainty collided with fresh interest-rate worries.

According to Reuters, by midday, the index sank 4.55 percent, pulling it more than ten percent below its October record close.

A decline of this scale marks a notable reversal, though a technical correction does not necessarily signal the start of a prolonged crash.

Instead, the pullback reflects growing unease over whether the unprecedented capital expenditures driving the artificial intelligence boom can maintain their current momentum.

Nvidia fell 7.7 percent, dragging the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down nearly ten percent, while the Nasdaq-100 surrendered roughly two trillion dollars in market value.

Scrutiny on Data Centers and Energy

The shift in sentiment followed a Democratic sweep in key midterm races across several states that host massive computing hubs.

Investors fear that newly elected lawmakers will increase scrutiny on data-center projects, especially in regions where local opposition to heavy power consumption and environmental impacts has intensified.

Any delays in permitting or construction could directly hit suppliers of chips, specialized servers, and grid equipment.

Melissa Brown, global head of investment decision research at SimCorp, emphasized how reliant the sector is on uninterrupted physical expansion:

“Investors appear to be recognizing that some newly elected members of Congress and governors are looking to slow the pace of AI infrastructure development,” Brown said.

“While it seems unlikely that they will be able to stop it altogether, any slowdown would raise concerns because the AI growth story has largely depended on the rapid buildout of supporting infrastructure.”

The retreat quickly broadened. Tesla dropped nine percent and SpaceX fell 11.4 percent following an election cycle where Elon Musk backed Republican candidates with substantial campaign funds.

Qualcomm also slid 11.5 percent after smartphone chip revenue trailed Wall Street forecasts, according to Reuters.

Macro Pressures Amplify the Pullback

Broader economic headwinds added to the pressure. Federal Reserve officials Beth Hammack and Thomas Barkin signaled on Thursday that stubborn inflation and elevated crude oil prices might justify additional interest rate increases.

Higher capital costs make debt-financed infrastructure buildouts considerably more expensive.

With monetary conditions remaining tight, traders have turned their attention to Friday’s U.S. employment report, which is expected to set the tone for the central bank’s upcoming rate decisions, Reuters reports.
