Coordinated bomb hoaxes forced more than 25 commercial airliners across Europe into emergency diversions.

For air passengers, the routine is familiar: stowing carry-on bags overhead, fastening seatbelts, and expecting a quiet journey.

On Thursday, that calm unraveled across the continent as pilots on more than 25 commercial flights received sudden alerts claiming explosives were on board, The Guardian reports.

Aircraft operated by carriers including Ryanair, easyJet, and Aer Lingus initiated rapid descents across 16 countries, diverting to the nearest secure runways.

On the tarmac, specialist police units and sniffer dogs swept every cabin and cargo hold.

The outcome confirmed authorities’ suspicions: each alert was an orchestrated hoax, leaving no trace of explosives behind.

Yet protocol leaves cockpits no leeway when high-altitude alerts flash red.

“Safety is the number one priority for the industry and we take all threats seriously,” said Nick Careen, senior vice-president at the global airline body Iata, urging law enforcement to identify the perpetrators swiftly.

Digital Trails and Extremist Claims

Investigators across Europe are piecing together the origins of the coordinated campaign, according to The Guardian.

Warning emails sent directly to airport authorities in Rome and Sofia were signed by “fighters of the Male State,” a militant Russian network known for ultranationalist and misogynistic propaganda.

The messages set an aggressive 60-minute ultimatum before alleged detonations, declaring that “your feminist regime will remember this for ever.”

Aviation security officials caution, however, that inquiries have found no conclusive evidence linking foreign governments directly to the hoax campaign, which disrupted at least 33 flights across the week.

The Heavy Price of Hybrid Disruption

Beyond the immediate alarm, the operational toll escalates rapidly. A single unscheduled diversion can cost a carrier as much as $250,000 once emergency inspections, extra fuel, missed passenger connections, and crew replacements are factored in, according to AP News.

With dozens of flights grounded or redirected within days, the cumulative fallout ripples across international schedules.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto linked the coordinated warnings to broader hybrid tactics aimed at testing Western resilience:

“It seems to me that every day now, from refrigerators to blood supplies in France, to these fake alarms, there’s someone who has an interest in stoking tensions,” Crosetto told reporters.

Crosetto described the strategy as “under-threshold warfare”—actions calculated to tie down resources and provoke anxiety while remaining beneath the threshold of open military conflict.

As cross-border police forces exchange forensic data, travelers should anticipate tighter terminal screenings in the days ahead.
