Swedish authorities have arrested a suspect following a deadly shooting at a hair salon in central Uppsala that left three people dead, all aged between 15 and 20.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening, approximately 60 kilometers north of Stockholm, according to the BBC and other media reports.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots during the attack, which took place in broad daylight in a busy part of the city.

“A person suspected of murder has been arrested,” police spokesperson Erik Akerlund confirmed at a press conference on Wednesday.

Local media outlets have reported that at least one of the victims may have been linked to organized crime, though police have not confirmed any connections to gang activity.

Sweden has seen a surge in gang-related violence in recent years, with criminal groups increasingly recruiting teenagers—some under the age of criminal responsibility, which is 15 in Sweden—to carry out violent acts.

While investigators have not yet determined whether the shooting was part of the ongoing gang conflict, several individuals deemed “of interest in the investigation” have been questioned.

Despite these concerns, police statistics show that shootings in Sweden declined in 2024 for the second consecutive year. Authorities recorded 296 incidents, down 20% from the previous year.

The investigation into the Uppsala shooting is ongoing.
