The new pope may follow in Francis’ footsteps by rejecting personal income

As Pope Leo XIV settles into his historic role, one practical yet symbolic question looms: will he accept the salary technically reserved for the Bishop of Rome? According to Italy’s Il Messaggero, the answer remains uncertain but could offer insight into the tone of his papacy.

The Vatican provides for all of the pontiff’s material needs, including housing, meals, healthcare, travel, and security.

Technically, the pope is entitled to a monthly salary of around €2,500. Yet this sum is largely ceremonial and subject to the personal decision of each pontiff.

A precedent of humility

Pope Francis, who served from 2013 to 2025, famously rejected his salary altogether, embracing a lifestyle of simplicity inspired by his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. Vatican officials confirmed at the time that Francis “actively declined to receive any salary.”

In a further symbolic gesture, Francis opted not to reside in the lavish Apostolic Palace but instead chose the more modest Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse near St. Peter’s Basilica.

Despite declining formal income, a pope hardly lacks for resources. The living expenses and support services available to the pontiff through Vatican provisions are estimated at approximately €14 million, according to reports—not as personal wealth, but as institutional backing.

A decision yet to come

Whether Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, will follow the same path remains to be seen. His decision could provide an early signal about the style and focus of his leadership. Will he continue the tradition of papal austerity or maintain the option, however symbolic, to accept the modest stipend?

The world will be watching closely. As Il Messaggero concludes, this small yet telling choice could help define the early tone of Leo XIV’s pontificate.
