James Comey, the former director of the FBI, is under investigation by the U.S. Secret Service after posting a photo to Instagram showing seashells arranged to form the number “8647.”
Though the image was soon deleted, Republican officials claim the post was a veiled call for violence against President Donald Trump.
What Does “8647” Mean?
The controversy centers on the interpretation of the number:
- “86” is American slang meaning to get rid of or kill.
- “47” refers to Trump’s status as the 47th president of the United States.
Together, critics allege, “8647” could be construed as a coded message to “eliminate Trump.”
Comey Deletes Post, Denies Any Violent Intent
Comey removed the post shortly after backlash erupted. He later clarified that he had “no idea” the number could be interpreted that way.
“I didn’t realize those numbers could be associated with violence,” he said.
“I’m against violence for any reason, so I deleted the post.”
He described it as an innocuous beach photo with “an interesting shell formation.”
Secret Service Confirms Investigation
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that the agency is investigating the post as a potential threat.
“We seriously investigate anything that could be interpreted as a potential threat… We are aware of the former FBI director’s post and take such rhetoric very seriously.”
The Secret Service has not confirmed whether Comey will be formally charged.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X that her department and the Secret Service are “investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”
Acting FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the FBI is supporting the Secret Service and monitoring the matter closely.
Trump Family and Allies React with Fury
Donald Trump Jr. responded swiftly, saying:
“James Comey is casually calling for my father to be killed.”
Secretary Noem took it a step further, stating bluntly on social media:
“Former FBI Director James Comey called for Trump’s assassination.”
The remarks amplified right-wing outrage and ignited calls for formal action.
Comey’s Troubled History with Trump
Comey, who served as FBI director from 2013 to 2017, has long had a high-profile adversarial relationship with Donald Trump.
He was dismissed by Trump while overseeing the Russia investigation.
He also faced criticism from both parties over his handling of the Clinton email inquiry during the 2016 election.
