The peace talk is over
For the first time in three years, Ukraine and Russia met for direct peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey, Friday – but after less than two hours of talking, no progress was made.
“Detached from reality”
One Ukrainian source told Retuers, that the Russian demands were “detached from reality and go far beyond anything that was previously discussed”, not specifying what that means.
The challenge issued
Last weekend, the Ukrainian President, Volodomyr Zelenskyy, issued a challenge to Putin to meet him face to face in Istanbul – Zelenskyy showed up in Turkey, Putin didn’t.

Speeking to the European Political Community Summit (EPC) in Albania Friday, the Ukrainian President left no doubt who he thinks is to blame for the Istanbul-meeting not bearing fruit, stating “if only Putin hadn’t been afraid to come to Turkey”.
“I was ready”
In a post of his speech at the EPC on X, Zelenskyy also said that he was in Turkey for a direct meeting with the Russian President, ready to resolce all key issues. “He (Putin) didn’t agree to anything.”
