On Saturday, a Mexican Navy training ship collided with the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, reports El Economista.

The ship was carrying 277 people when the incident happened. Authorities in both the U.S. and Mexico confirmed the crash. Two people died and at least 20 others were injured.

The ship, called Cuauhtémoc, was on a training mission. The Mexican Navy said the collision caused damage to the ship and stopped the rest of the planned cruise.

They are now checking the condition of the ship and its equipment. Naval and local officials are working together on the investigation and support efforts.

Photos from the scene show that the ship’s tall masts hit the bottom of the bridge.

Some crew members were standing high up on the masts at the time. The impact caused parts of the ship’s rigging to snap.

Fortunately, nothing fell into the water and no rescue operations were needed.

The New York Police Department said they are still investigating the crash. They also asked people to avoid the area because of traffic delays and the presence of emergency crews.

In a statement, the Mexican Navy shared that eleven of the injured people are in serious condition.

Nine others are stable. The Navy said it will keep the public informed and is committed to being transparent.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her condolences to the families of those who died. She also thanked U.S. officials for their support in helping the injured.

The ship was built for training and has made many international trips.

Saturday’s crash has now raised serious questions about safety and communication between the ship’s crew and local authorities. The full cause of the accident is still unknown.
