More and more Americans are exploring the idea of moving abroad.

And, according to a large-scale survey by Expatsi, Portugal is the number one country they’re eyeing.

The relocation platform surveyed over 116,000 people, analyzing their lifestyle goals, budget, and motivations.

Trailing Portugal on the list of most desired destinations are Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Ireland.

Why Are Americans Looking to Leave?

According to a report by Digi24, the reasons vary, but many are driven by a mix of personal growth, adventure, and a desire to escape political and social tensions at home.

Over 50% of respondents believe the U.S. is too conservative or too divided, while nearly half cite concerns about gun violence and a need for greater freedom in their day-to-day lives.

Others are thinking financially. About 41% hope that moving abroad will lower their cost of living or help them save more.

Interest in leaving the U.S. spiked significantly after Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024.

In November alone, Expatsi saw nearly 51,000 website visitors, a sharp rise from just 8,000 in October. The company’s revenue also surged—growing by 19,000% in just one year.

Expatsi, which offers relocation tours and guides, has already organized hundreds of trips in 2024. According to the company, around 30% of participants are now actively moving through the relocation process.

For many, the clock is ticking. Two-thirds of those surveyed want to move by 2026, and 12% are aiming to leave the U.S. within the next six months.

Some are planning retirement abroad, while others are applying for digital nomad visas or specialized work permits.
