Transfer Interest Emerges

Atletico Madrid have emerged as serious suitors for Andy Robertson, with the Scottish international entering the final year of his contract at Liverpool. The Spanish club are evaluating left-back reinforcements and view the 31-year-old as a seasoned, high-quality option who may be available at a reasonable price.

Robertson joined Liverpool in 2017 from Hull City and has since been a pivotal figure in their modern era under Jürgen Klopp, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and more. But as Liverpool undergo a squad evolution under new head coach Arne Slot, big changes are expected, and Robertson may be among those moved on.

Form Dip & Fitness Concerns

Last season saw Robertson’s performances come under scrutiny, with a noticeable dip in consistency. His once-reliable bursts down the left flank became less frequent, and tracking data showed a decline in sprint frequency and top-end speed. Now 31, he’s begun to adapt to a more conservative playing style, but the club appears ready to plan for the future.

Robertson, in a recent interview, acknowledged the situation:

Liverpool’s Kerkez Contingency

Liverpool are already preparing for life after Robertson, having identified Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as a long-term replacement. The 20-year-old Hungarian full-back impressed last season and was responsible for 44% of Bournemouth’s attacking play down the left. His similar attacking profile and youthful upside make him an ideal fit in Liverpool’s evolving tactical setup.

The Reds currently have Kostas Tsimikas as backup left-back, but are reportedly open to offers for the Greek international this summer.

Contract Situation & Transfer Dynamics

Robertson’s contract expires in summer 2026, meaning this summer is Liverpool’s last chance to sell for significant value. Atlético’s interest could prompt an offer, especially if Liverpool move forward with Kerkez.

Valuation and fee details remain speculative, but with Robertson’s age and contract situation, a deal in the range of £20–30 million could be realistic, particularly with Atlético not known for extravagant spending on defenders.

Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Plans

This potential transfer forms part of a broader overhaul at Anfield:

  • Florian Wirtz has joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record fee of £116.5 million.
  • Other positions, including midfield depth and a backup goalkeeper, are also being evaluated.
