Argentine superstar Lionel Messi made a sensational mark at the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday night with a stunning free-kick goal that sealed Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over Porto at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Messi’s moment of brilliance came in the 53rd minute and proved to be the match-winner, as he curled the ball into the top corner from just outside the penalty area, leaving Porto goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos with no chance.

Porto Strike First

Porto had the better start to the match and took the lead in the 8th minute when striker Samu converted a penalty, giving the Portuguese side an early advantage. They maintained their lead until halftime, despite several Miami efforts to respond.

Second-Half Comeback

Inter Miami found their rhythm immediately after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Marcelo Weigandt burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the box. Telasco Segovia, positioned near the penalty spot, smashed the ball into the roof of the net to level the score at 1-1.

Only seven minutes later, it was Messi’s turn to take center stage. From a position just outside the arc of the penalty area, he unleashed a trademark free-kick that curled past the wall and nestled perfectly into the far corner, a goal worthy of winning any match.

Porto’s Dominance in Vain

Although Porto created more chances over the course of the match, it was Inter Miami who walked away with the surprise victory. Messi’s goal proved to be the difference as the American side held firm against late pressure from the Portuguese team.

Group Standings After Two Rounds

With this result, Inter Miami now have a strong chance of reaching the Round of 16. After two rounds in Group A, both Inter Miami and Palmeiras of Brazil sit atop the group with four points each. Porto and Al Ahly remain on one point apiece heading into the final round of group matches.
