High-Profile Sculpture Theft

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a significant bronze sculpture from the Mt Pleasant Community Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand.
He is set to appear in the Christchurch District Court on 16 September, facing a charge of theft.
Loss of Local Artwork

The sculpture, titled Flight, was created by celebrated Christchurch sculptor Llew Summers in 2018.
Weighing 2.2 tons and stretching 2.2 metres (about 7.2 feet) long, the work depicts a large bird mid-flight, inspired by the natural estuary landscape near the site.

Sold as Scrap Metal

Police were first alerted to the theft on 6 June 2025.
“Unfortunately, our investigation indicates that the sculpture has been destroyed and much of it sold as scrap metal, with only small pieces being recovered,” said Acting Detective Sergeant Steph Trengrove in a press release.
Final Work

Flight was the last major bronze work completed by Llew Summers before his death in 2019.
The piece held sentimental value for the local community and was considered a legacy of Summers’ contribution to public art in Christchurch.
