What is happening?

Russia has sent shockwaves through Europe by flying over 10 drones deep into Polish airspace during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The incursion temporarily shut down Warsaw’s main airport and forced NATO fighter jets into action.

Poland confirmed the drones crossed into its skies, marking what officials called the most serious violation of NATO territory since the war in Ukraine began.

Several Russian drones were shot down during the incident, which Polish officials swiftly labeled “an act of aggression.”

Boyechko: “This is an existential crisis for NATO”

Yuriy Boyechko, a U.S.-based analyst with Hope for Ukraine, warned the event could mark an existential crisis for NATO.

He stated that Russia is testing the alliance’s resolve and described the drone incursion as a direct challenge that demands a firm and unified response.

Trump’s foreign policy under fire

Boyechko placed blame on former President Donald Trump, claiming his last eight months in office were marked by “disastrous foreign policy.”

He argued that Trump allowed Russia to act unchecked by cutting military support to Ukraine and shielding Putin from new sanctions.

“Putin sees that the ‘King has no clothes’,” Boyechko said, adding that Trump’s inaction has only emboldened Russia.

He warned that by failing to enforce consequences, Trump created an opening for Putin to continue crossing red lines—now extending directly into NATO airspace.

Biden vs Trump

Boyechko drew a clear line between President Biden’s and Trump’s handling of the Ukraine conflict.

While Biden delivered weapons, imposed sanctions, and rallied allies, Trump, according to Boyechko, reversed course—cutting aid, cozying up to Putin in Alaska, and sowing division within NATO.

“Hands covered in Ukrainian blood”

In one of his strongest remarks, Boyechko criticized Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska, calling it symbolic of a broader failure.

“Trump talks every day that he is a law and order president but shook hands with Putin… those hands are covered in Ukrainian blood,” he said.

Poland confirms incursion, labels it aggression

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the drones had entered Polish skies and that military forces took action against those posing direct threats.

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz echoed the seriousness of the situation, repeating that it was an “act of aggression.”

NATO faces its defining moment

As NATO ministers gather in London to assess the crisis, pressure is mounting on the alliance to demonstrate its deterrent strength.

For Boyechko, the implications are clear: if Putin faces no consequences, NATO’s red lines—and perhaps the alliance itself—could cease to matter.

“NATO is dead if there’s no response”

“If Putin won’t get any consequences for flying multiple drones on purpose into Poland,” Boyechko concluded: Then it’s safe to say that NATO is dead as a security alliance.”

His message: the time for symbolic statements is over—decisive action is now essential.
