Countries around the world are increasingly turning to nuclear power to meet growing energy needs.
Iran, facing electricity shortages, is no exception. On September 24, Iran and the Russian company Rosatom signed a contract to build four modern nuclear power plants in the southeastern Sirik region, according to WP.
The deal is valued at $25 billion. It is expected to significantly boost Iran’s electricity production.
A Major Increase

The project will take place on a 500-hectare site in Hormozgan province. The new plants will generate 5,020 megawatts of electricity, a major increase compared to Iran’s current capacity.
The country currently operates only one nuclear plant, in Bushehr, built by Russia.

That plant produces about one gigawatt of power. The new reactors will be third-generation models.
Expanding Cooperation between Russia and Iran

Rosatom confirmed the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Moscow. The agreement covers small nuclear power plants. Officials did not disclose the full implementation schedule or all technical details.
Iran has long struggled with power shortages, especially during periods of high demand. The new agreement expands cooperation with Russia, a country that has historically supplied Iran with nuclear technology.
UN Sanctions

The deal comes at a tense moment internationally. The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have recently decided to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran.
They accuse Tehran of failing to comply with the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran rejects these claims and says it does not seek nuclear weapons.
Russian Support for Iran

Russia has also expressed strong support for Iran. Moscow has condemned recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel has claimed that Iran is close to developing a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies these allegations.
The four new plants in Sirik are likely to change the energy landscape in Iran. They will help meet domestic electricity needs and reduce reliance on older facilities.
At the same time, the deal shows how Iran continues to strengthen its partnership with Russia despite international pressure.
Energy Independence

Construction is expected to take several years. Meanwhile, Iran will continue to operate its existing plant in Bushehr.
Analysts say the Sirik project demonstrates Tehran’s long-term focus on energy independence while navigating a complex geopolitical environment.
