Rapper 50 Cent has left New York City, citing the election of Zohran Mamdani as the reason.

The 50-year-old artist and entrepreneur, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, announced the move on Instagram with the message: “New York, it’s over, let’s pack up and leave!”

A new tax plan

Mamdani, 34, is New York’s new mayor—and a self-proclaimed socialist.

His proposed 2% income tax on residents earning over $1 million has drawn criticism from some of the city’s wealthiest.

Jackson, a longtime Republican supporter, had already opposed the tax plan months earlier, saying he would pay Mamdani to leave the city.

Mamdani’s tax is expected to affect around 34,000 people, bringing in an estimated $4 billion for public services.

Supporters say it’s a fair way to address inequality. Critics, like Jackson, see it as a penalty for success.

From “get rich” to “get out”

“RIP NYC FOUNDED IN 1624 DIED IN 2025,” Jackson posted on Instagram after the election, signaling his departure to Florida, a state known for low taxes and Republican leadership.

While Jackson once topped Forbes’ list of highest-paid musicians, his finances have taken hits in recent years. In 2024, he settled over $23 million in debt, agreeing to sell his mansion to cover part of the sum.

Despite claiming billionaire status in 2023, his true net worth is now unclear.

Critics online were quick to remind him of his roots. “You grew up on food stamps,” one user commented.

Another wrote, “Man, pay your 2% and relax.”

Jackson has supported Republican candidates for years and backed Donald Trump.
