After six quiet years, the Jumanji franchise is finally waking up again.

A fresh image from the upcoming Jumanji sequel has landed, offering a glimpse of the franchise’s next shift.

Aswell as a confirmation that the movie is in production, offered by Dwayne Johnson on his instagram.

The main avatars are no longer trapped inside digital landscapes, and their arrival in an ordinary city hints at a new direction for the story.

Fans had long expected such a transition, but the shot still sparked excitement across social media when it dropped this week.

A new setting

Sony Pictures posted the photo on November 19, showing Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black standing on a snowy street in Boston.

According to the studio’s statement on X, “Look who’s on the loose,” the characters are fully present in the real world for the first time.

This marks a clear break from the previous two films, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level, which both followed the premise of players being absorbed into a video game.

The image has fueled speculation that the group may encounter the classic board game now that they’re outside the digital realm.

Nods to the original

One detail strengthening that theory is a piece of costuming unveiled by the filmmakers. Johnson’s avatar, Dr. Smolder Bravestone, will wear a necklace featuring dice from the original 1995 Jumanji movie, a gesture he said was intentional.

On Instagram, the actor explained, “The significance of the dice in the last picture is a little Easter egg that my character… wears on a necklace in our final film. It’s the dice from the original 1995 JUMANJI and a way of paying homage, love, and respect to the great Robin Williams.”

He also confirmed that this sequel will close the trilogy.

Final chapter

Johnson described the production as “a massive, fun, heartfelt adventure,” adding that ending the franchise on this film “feels emotionally appropriate” after the cast’s first table read.

The movie, the last in the current run of Jumanji stories, is scheduled to premiere on December 11, 2026.
