Authorities in New York City are trying to piece together how a newborn ended up behind a Brooklyn building on Thursday morning.
The discovery halted residents and drew emergency crews to a quiet corner of a public housing complex.
Police say many questions remain unanswered as the investigation continues.
The discovery
According to PEOPLE, the New York Police Department responded to a 911 call about an unconscious infant found behind the New York City Housing Authority’s Bay View Houses in Canarsie. An NYPD spokesperson told the outlet that officers arrived to learn an unidentified male newborn had been discovered “unconscious and unresponsive.”
Emergency medical personnel pronounced the baby dead at the scene, the spokesperson said.

Found under leaves
Local outlets PIX11, the New York Daily News and NBC New York reported that the baby was recovered inside a black bag placed beneath a pile of leaves.
Sources cited by these publications said the child had not yet been identified.
The city’s medical examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine both the cause and timing of the newborn’s death. Police have not released further details about who found the infant or how long the bag may have been there.
Police are continuing to investigate.
