Italy has introduced a new legal category for femicide, tightening penalties as the country confronts persistently high levels of violence against women.
The reform arrives amid mounting public pressure for stronger protections and clearer recognition of crimes driven by misogyny.
New criminal provision
According to dpa, cited by Agerpres, parliament voted unanimously to add femicide to Article 577 of the criminal code.
The provision allows for life imprisonment when a woman or girl is killed because of her gender, out of hatred or with the intention of limiting her freedom.
The Senate had already backed the text earlier this year, but Tuesday’s final vote coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The law also strengthens sanctions in related areas, increasing possible sentences for stalking and the circulation of fabricated intimate videos.
Broader support measures
Alongside tougher penalties, the legislation expands funding for women’s shelters and support services.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the decision, describing it as an “important signal against the barbarity of violence against women.”
Her government has been under pressure to respond to recent high-profile cases that have fuelled public debate on safety and prevention.
Authorities say life sentences have been imposed in several femicide cases even under previous rules, but the new classification creates a clearer legal framework.
