Netflix has quietly rolled back a feature many subscribers rely on: casting from the mobile app to a TV. Over the last two weeks, users began noticing the Cast button disappearing from both the iOS and Android apps, and Netflix has now updated its support pages to reflect the change.
Casting disappears for most devices
According to the updated documentation, Netflix no longer supports casting from mobile devices to most modern TVs and streaming hardware, including newer Chromecast models and Google’s latest Google TV Streamer. Instead, the company directs people to open Netflix directly on their TV and use the device’s built-in app.
The only remaining exceptions are older Chromecast models without remotes and TVs with built-in Google Cast support. Even then, casting now requires an ad-free Netflix plan. Subscribers on the ad-supported tier cannot cast at all, even on legacy hardware.
Sudden removal and minimal communication
Reports from Reddit suggest the change began rolling out quietly in mid-November, with no advance warning from Netflix. Some users say customer service representatives indicated that casting was removed from devices with dedicated remotes to “improve the customer experience,” though the company has not publicly explained the reasoning.
Netflix’s decision mirrors a similar move in 2019, when the company dropped AirPlay support from its iOS app as Apple expanded AirPlay availability to third-party TVs.
