Prince William’s relationship with the Welsh Guards stretches back decades, long before a recent festive visit brought him back among the regiment in Windsor.

The Prince of Wales has built ties through training, patronage and leadership, shaping a connection that has evolved alongside his royal role.

Years in uniform

William became Colonel of the Welsh Guards in 2022, taking over the position from his father, King Charles, following the monarch’s accession.

Before that, William served for years as Colonel of the Irish Guards, a role he held from his wedding until the handover, when Princess Catherine succeeded him.

King Charles had been Colonel of the Welsh Guards from March 1975 during his long time as Prince of Wales and has remained Head of the Armed Forces since becoming King, reports the Express.

Early experiences

William’s association with the regiment predates his senior appointments. Before starting his studies at the University of St Andrews, he spent part of his gap year training alongside the Welsh Guards.

That period was described by royal author Katie Nicholl in her book William and Harry, which outlined the intensity of the exercises he undertook.

She wrote: “He was taught how to kill and prepare his food. An exercise code-named Native Trail began with instructors slaughtering a pig, hanging it from a pole and butchering it.”

Festive return

According to the Daily Express, that long-standing link was on display again when William made a surprise appearance at a Christmas gathering with the Welsh Guards in Windsor.

During the visit, he spent time with officers and soldiers from the 1st Battalion and spoke with junior ranks about their recent activities since returning from overseas training.

The appearance offered a more relaxed moment for the Prince of Wales, set against the backdrop of his formal military responsibilities.

Wider changes

The visit comes amid broader shifts in royal military roles. In addition to William’s transition in 2022, King Charles also appointed the Queen as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

She succeeded Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, marking another change in the distribution of ceremonial positions within the Royal Family.
